Carpet care / Dust and allergens · Updated · New Life Carpet

A clean-looking carpet can still hold dust and particles. Here is where professional cleaning fits into looking after your home, and why it should come with realistic expectations.

The short answer: Appropriate cleaning can remove accumulated soil and some particles from carpet fibres. It cannot guarantee an allergen-free home or treat asthma and allergies. The source of the problem matters as much as the carpet.

What can collect in a carpet?

Shoes, everyday use and pets introduce grit, hair and other debris. House dust mites and pet-related allergens can also be present in carpets and upholstered furniture. Mould is a separate concern associated with damp conditions.

UK Health Security Agency guidance on indoor airborne allergens explains these sources and the importance of controlling moisture. Seeing dust or experiencing symptoms does not tell you which particular trigger is involved.

What does professional carpet cleaning actually do?

At New Life Carpet, we assess the material and condition, prepare the carpet and select a suitable treatment. On suitable carpets, pre-spray and agitation help loosen soiling before hot water extraction removes it along with moisture. The aim is a thorough clean with careful moisture control.

That is different from a medical outcome. We do not measure household allergen exposure during an ordinary cleaning visit, and a brighter carpet does not prove that symptoms will improve. A clean also cannot remove the ongoing source of new dust or pet allergens.

A practical routine for the rest of the home

  • Vacuum with care. Follow the carpet maker’s instructions and maintain your vacuum’s filters and collection system. Give entrances, stairs and accessible edges proper attention.
  • Include other soft furnishings. Carpet is only one part of the room. Follow the care instructions for upholstery, curtains and bedding too.
  • Deal with moisture at its source. A leaking pipe or recurring condensation needs attention. Repeated carpet cleaning will not fix a damp building.
  • Allow cleaned carpets to dry. Plan suitable airflow and follow the drying advice for the job. Avoid covering damp carpet with rugs or plastic.
  • Use the advice for your diagnosed condition. If someone has asthma or an allergy, follow their clinician’s recommendations rather than choosing a cleaning schedule as treatment.

Our between-cleans carpet care guide gives practical steps for managing everyday dirt without repeatedly applying spot cleaner.

What to tell us before booking

Tell us which rooms need cleaning, the carpet type if known, any persistent dampness or odours, and which products you have already used. Mention known fragrance or cleaning-product sensitivities before the appointment so we can discuss the proposed process and product information.

You do not need to send medical records. The useful information is what affects access, product suitability and the way the work is carried out. We can explain the cleaning process; your healthcare professional advises on symptoms and treatment.

Common questions

Does hot water extraction sterilise a carpet?

An ordinary carpet cleaning service is not a sterilisation service. Temperature, contact time, material and the process all matter. We do not promise to eliminate every dust mite, microorganism or allergen.

Should I replace the carpet if someone has allergies?

That decision should follow advice about the person’s actual triggers and the condition of the room. A cleaning quote alone cannot establish whether carpet replacement would improve symptoms.

How long will the room be out of use?

Many carpets take around 4–12 hours to dry after our hot water extraction process, but construction, humidity, temperature and airflow can extend that. See our carpet drying guide and follow the advice given after your clean.
