Can Wool Carpets Be Professionally Cleaned?

What to ask before booking, why the cleaning method matters, and what to do if you are unsure about your carpet.

Yes — with a method chosen for the carpet

Wool carpets can be professionally cleaned. The useful question is whether the proposed treatment suits your particular carpet, its condition and its care instructions. “Wool” alone is not enough information to choose a cleaning method.

If you are worried about damaging an expensive carpet, tell us before booking. At New Life Carpet, we assess the fibres, construction and condition before advising on suitable cleaning. Send the manufacturer’s details if you have them; if you do not, say that the material is uncertain.

Does professional cleaning mean steam cleaning?

People often use “steam cleaning” to describe hot water extraction. This uses a cleaning solution and extraction equipment; it is different from passing a household steam appliance over the pile.

British Wool’s care guide explains that professional extraction can be suitable for wool when temperature and moisture removal are controlled. It warns against domestic steam cleaning. A machine label or a promise of “extra heat” is not a substitute for assessing the carpet.

Ask the cleaner which method they propose and why. If your manufacturer specifies a particular approach, share those instructions before work is agreed.

What should be checked before cleaning?

The WoolSafe maintenance guide recommends pre-testing and choosing the method for the carpet and its soiling. It identifies excessive moisture, excessive mechanical action and unsuitable chemicals as common causes of cleaning damage.

  • Material and construction: provide the carpet label, invoice or care sheet if available.
  • Existing concerns: point out loose edges, joins, previous water damage or changes in texture.
  • Marks and previous treatments: explain what was spilled and which products have already been used.
  • Practical arrangements: agree the accessible areas, furniture handling and drying plan.

A useful assessment should leave you knowing what will be cleaned, what remains uncertain and whether any area needs a different approach.

Can every stain be removed from wool?

No cleaner should promise that every mark will disappear before assessing it. A pale patch, a worn traffic lane and a spill are different problems. Cleaning removes soiling; it cannot be relied on to replace missing colour or worn fibres.

Photograph important marks in daylight and include a wider view of the room. Tell us roughly how old the mark is and whether you have treated it. That is more useful than trying another product immediately before the appointment.

For a mark that disappears and then returns, see our separate guide to stains returning after cleaning. For pet accidents, mention the odour as well as the visible patch when enquiring.

What should you do about a fresh spill?

Blot liquid with a clean white cloth rather than scrubbing. Lift loose solids carefully, and avoid soaking the area or combining household cleaners. WoolSafe advises using small amounts of suitable spot treatment on a cloth and following product instructions, including testing first.

Check the carpet manufacturer’s advice before applying a product. A treatment advertised for carpets generally is not automatically suitable for wool. If the spill is large, the colour transfers or you are unsure what the material is, stop experimenting and seek advice.

When contacting us, describe the spill, when it happened and what you have already done. Keep the product packaging so we can see exactly what was used.

How should you prepare for the visit?

Agree the scope first: a clean around furniture is different from cleaning underneath it. Clear small belongings and discuss larger items rather than moving heavy furniture without a plan. Our furniture preparation guide covers that in detail.

Allow time for the carpet to dry before returning to normal use. Ask for guidance for your carpet and room conditions; do not assume every wool carpet will be ready at the same time. See what affects drying time when planning the appointment.

Tell us if the hallway is your only route through the house or if you have a fixed deadline for using the room. Those details help us discuss a realistic visit.

Request advice for your wool carpet

New Life Carpet serves Pontefract WF8, Castleford WF10, Wakefield and nearby areas. To request a cleaning quote, send your postcode, the rooms or stairs involved, and any manufacturer or care information you have.

Include your main concern: general soiling, a particular mark, an odour or uncertainty about whether cleaning is suitable. We can then discuss the next step rather than quoting from a room count alone. Our pricing guide explains the other details that affect a quote.
