Carpet care guide · Making the right choice

Clean or replace your carpet?

A tired-looking carpet does not always need replacing. Here is how to judge what cleaning could improve, and when a repair or new flooring makes more sense.

The short answer: if the main problem is accumulated dirt and the carpet is otherwise sound, professional cleaning is worth considering. If fibres are missing, the carpet is torn, or its colour has been permanently altered, cleaning alone will not put those things back. Some carpets have both soiling and wear, so a successful clean can still leave visible differences.

Start with the problem, rather than the carpet’s age

A grey route from the doorway to the sofa can look like dirt. A pale patch can look like a stain. Neither tells the whole story on its own. Before deciding to clean or replace your carpet, look at its condition, how it feels underfoot and what you want to change.

If you still like the carpet and mainly want it cleaner, an assessment is a sensible first step. If you want a different colour, better comfort or a repair to damaged flooring, a cleaning quote will only answer part of the question.

Why a dark patch is not always dirt

Carpet pile reflects light differently as its direction changes. Cormar explains that repeated foot traffic can flatten the pile in walkways and make them appear lighter or shaded. That appearance is not necessarily a removable stain.

Brintons also distinguishes temporary shading from permanent tracking and random shading. This is why we should not promise that cleaning will make every traffic lane match the protected carpet beneath a sofa.

Look at the area from both ends of the room in daylight. If the appearance changes, mention that when enquiring. It is a useful observation, although it does not diagnose the carpet. Cleaning can remove soil from a worn area while the underlying difference in texture remains.

What professional cleaning can realistically do

The aim is to remove soiling using a method suited to the carpet. At New Life Carpet, our work can include dry-soil removal, suitable pre-treatment, agitation where appropriate and hot water extraction. The treatment depends on the material, construction, condition and manufacturer’s care advice.

That is different from rebuilding worn fibres or replacing lost colour. Tell us about important marks before the visit so we can discuss likely limitations. A heavily soiled carpet may improve considerably, but “like new” is not a promise we can make from a photograph.

Be clear about what would make the clean worthwhile. Would you be happy with a cleaner carpet if a worn walkway remained visible? If the answer is no, discuss that before spending money.

When repair or replacement deserves a closer look

Cleaning will not close a tear, replace missing pile or repair a failed join. If you can see damage, loose edges or backing, ask a fitter or carpet repair specialist whether a local repair is practical. A problem in one small area does not automatically mean replacing every carpet in the house.

Persistent odours also need a proper assessment. Contamination can reach beyond the visible surface, so a routine clean may not resolve it. Our dog urine odour guide explains why the depth of the problem matters.

Compare the complete costs

Compare a written cleaning quote with the full cost of replacement: carpet, any required underlay, fitting, removal and disposal of the old flooring, and furniture handling. Ask what each quotation includes. There is no useful universal percentage saving without knowing the actual room and the replacement you would choose.

Our minimum domestic cleaning charge is £80. The total depends on the agreed areas and treatment; it is not a fixed price for every room or property. See our guide to what affects a cleaning quote.

Send useful photos before you decide

A few clear details give us a better starting point than “the carpet looks old”. Include:

  • A wide daylight photo of the room and a close-up of each important mark.
  • Your postcode, the rooms or stairs involved and approximate sizes.
  • The carpet material or manufacturer’s label, if you have it.
  • Any odour, damage, previous cleaning or stain-removal products used.
  • Your main concern and the result you are hoping for.

Photos help us discuss the next step, but they cannot show every issue with the pile, backing or underlay. An inspection may still be needed.

Common questions

Is an old carpet worth cleaning?

It can be, if it is sound and you want to keep it. Age alone does not establish whether a mark is removable or whether the carpet is beyond useful service. Its condition and your expectations matter more.

Will cleaning remove every stain?

No. Some marks respond to treatment; others involve permanent staining, colour loss or wear. Tell us what caused the mark and what has already been used, so we can discuss it realistically.

Can you tell from a photo whether it needs replacing?

We can discuss visible concerns and whether cleaning is worth investigating. A photo cannot reliably confirm the condition of the backing or underlay, and it is not a substitute for inspection when the cause is unclear.

How should we plan around the clean?

Agree furniture handling and the accessible areas in advance. Allow drying time before normal use; carpet type and room conditions affect it. Our furniture preparation guide and drying guide explain what to plan.
